RiteCounter

RiteCounter is not only new to tellertest.com, but it is so new that it is still in beta. It can be noticed that some things require a bit extra attention from the developers, but it amazes how good this counter looks. And there are a couple of options that other counters do not have. First we have to say something about the appearance of the RiteCounter stats pages. They look really wunderful, but the navigation requires quite some time to get used to. Once you find your way amongst the menus and options, you will eventually!, then you can enjoy the dynamic, flashy, graphs. The bar graphs are built by falling rocks from the sky, first time I saw it I was immediately attracted to it. Of course after a while you hardly notice it any more, but then remain the very clear graphs that you do not need reading glasses to study.

There is an option to export data to Excel, some other counters offer this as well. But there are also some unique options that we have not seen before with a counter. First, RiteCounter has a builtin link tracker that keeps track of how many times people clicked on the links on your website. With this, you no longer really need a separate link tracker as MyBlogLog.

Secondly, there is a report in RiteCounter that tells about "unsanctioned access". This means that people have read the content from your site, but not on your site. Huh? Well, a simple example: your webpage is copied by someone else and the copied page is being read by a person. Or more common: your page is being read from the Google cache, or through a translator service.

There are also things that can do with some improvement. RiteCounter keeps 31 days of history of your data, this limits your ability to look further back in time or to determine monthly trends. Also, despite all the clear graphs and tables, there is one very hard to read table: the table with referrer information. There is too much data put together in one table and this makes it hard to read and the table is spread over unnecessary number of pages.

One option kept us puzzled for a while. RiteCounter has the ability to report on click paths, i.e. the route visitors took through your site. However to see a click path, you need to enter an IP address or host name of a visitor, but nowhere to be found how you can obtain these IP addresses. So how you can use this option remains unclear until now.

Our test result: in its current stage of development, RiteCounter is a fairly good tracking service. With further improvements, we expect it to end up in the top of the tellertest ranking eventually, but it will require some attention from the developers.

Well, I tried it out on my site. doesn’t do a lot. Only registers one visitor IP address, “NO DATA” displays for top search engines, and also for keywords. Pretty useless. I removed their code from my sites.

I used ritecounter for a while now and everything is fine. Except that in the last few days the server has been down a lot. They provide a lot of info regarding the path, search engines and keywords used. Not bad at all!
Except in the last few days – the first part of June09.

I have been using ritecounter for several years now and never had any complaints until today. About 6 months or so ago, ritecounter’s website went down completely and for an entire weekend I lost all stats for 5 websites I have their counter code on. The following Monday the site was back up and I emailed them through their “contact us” form, never received a response. I chalked it up and let it go until this weekend. Since Saturday, the site will not allow me to login, tells me I am not registered and wont let me use the contact form to report the issue. I then asked a friend who uses them to log into her account and same thing. Now, the site is completely down, same thing that happened 6 months ago. I have since learned it is best to just not use them and use stat counter as they have no issues like this. Ritecounter obviously sucks and has no excuse for this. They should be removed from the internet and not allowed to offer their services until they figure out how to operate
